How Far in Advance Should I Book a Photography Session?

If you’ve ever wondered “When should I book my photography session?” you’re not alone. The truth is, the best time to book depends on the type of session you want — but one thing is always true: the earlier, the better.


Here at Yellow Blossom Photography in Haverhill, Suffolk, I specialise in maternity, newborn, and family photography. Because my calendar fills quickly — especially during busy seasons — booking ahead ensures you get your preferred date and plenty of time to prepare for your session.


Maternity Photography – Book 2–3 Months in Advance

The ideal time for maternity photos is between 30 and 35 weeks, when your bump is beautifully round, but you’re still comfortable enough to pose.

Booking 2–3 months before this gives us time to:

  • Reserve your perfect date.
  • Plan outfits and styles that suit your vision.
  • Arrange for partner or sibling involvement if you’d like them included.


Newborn Photography – Book Before Baby Arrives

Newborn sessions are best when your baby is between 5 and 21 days old. Babies are sleepier and curl up naturally at this stage, making those dreamy poses possible. Because babies arrive on their own schedule, I take a limited number of newborn bookings per month and reserve a flexible slot around your due date. If you've missed the 21 day window, please don't panic - It's never too late! I offer Newborn sessions up to 6 weeks of age or smiler sessions for those little ones who are little older.

Tip: As soon as you’ve had your 12 or 20-week scan, it’s a great time to get booked in.


Family Photography – Book 4–6 Weeks Ahead

Family sessions can be booked year-round, but popular months (spring, early summer, and autumn) fill fast. Booking at least 4–6 weeks ahead means we can choose the best light, location, and timing for your family. If you would like a weekend slot it's best to secure a space 12+ weeks in advance as my calendar for weekends is usually booked up way in advance

If you’re planning an outdoor Suffolk location, early booking also means we have flexibility to reschedule in case of bad weather.



Cake Smash & Milestone Sessions – Book 1–2 Months Ahead

First birthday shoots are hugely popular. I recommend booking approx 8 weeks before your child’s birthday — that way you get your session date, and your images will be ready in time for birthday celebrations or party displays.
